Bokashi Bucket Tips & Comments - April '14

In no Particular Order:

  1. Don't keep your bucket in direct sunlight or on a Hot Balcony/Porch.  (high temperatures will kill the microbial activity)
  2. If the pickled waste smells bad?  Then that may not mean the system has failed, it could be for a number of reasons.  Discard, or bury the waste, wash out bucket and start again with the provided instructions, and use a fresh bag of Bokashi mix.  For instructions that meet Australian conditions, feel free to request a complimentary booklet via info@bokashi.com.au including your *Australian Postal Address.
  3. Drain off the Bokashi juice regularly.  If you don't believe you can water it out regularly (Watering Can/Veges/Ornamental's), then you can always use it as a Natural Drain Cleaner around the house pipes.  The Juice is alive with not only microbial activity, but also the nutrients and proteins of the food waste you have been collecting.  As time goes by, the life of these benefits decreases.  You cannot save this juice beyond a few days and expect it to be beneficial.
  4. The taps provided with the bucket pictured in this blog are maintainable. If they are blocked, then try and use the tip of a bamboo skewer to clear the blockage.  Alternatively,  they can be disassembled and reassembled.  We recommend you disassemble/re-assemble each year as a service, washing each part and checking for wear.  Replacement taps are available for a small cost in Australia in various colours. Request Parts at your Local Australian Stockist, or request a price from Manufacturer Direct.  Tap Maintenance Video
I hope you find this tip's useful.  I you have any further questions, please do not hesitate to contact the writer via this Blogspace.

Shopping around for Bokashi Mix and Bokashi Buckets

Loads of people are buying online these days and why not?

Be careful to ensure you are buying from a reputable distributor or one of their authorised resellers.  When you buy a brand that specialises in a product, you can be sure that you have the support for that item and you have a reseller (or the distributor) to go back to, so that if you should endure; any issues, or need spare parts, they can provide you with immediate or ongoing supportive information (or best practices)

Bokashi Composting Australia has been operating for 8 years in the Australia market.  They have many resellers in each of Australia’s main centres.  Click on the reseller’s web links to see what other sustainability products they sell.  There is loads of physical retail businesses, Eco & Health Food Shops, Kitchenware Dens, Mitre 10’s and Sustainability Ventures to supply (and resupply) your “Bokashi One” needs (shop locally).  A lot of these resellers are actual shops, so if you don’t like shopping online, you can visit the actual shop to touch and feel what you are buying!

The newly branded “Bokashi One” Bokashi system arrives with full instructions to make you indoor kitchen composting system easy and helps provide you with details to collect nutrient rich compost to condition and enrich your garden soil.  How good does that make you feel?  No Smells, No Insect attraction, just “Natural & Organic Garden Results” and don’t forget the valuable “Bokashi Juice”, that you can “water out” to your plants or grass, or use the “Bokashi Juice”, as a quasi-drain cleaner.

Bokashi Juice - Dilution Rates

Received an enquiry from a customer today that has read several different versions of how he should dilute Bokashi Juice. This was my response:

Hi xxxx

Apologies that you have been confused. We sell and distribute Green Frog Bokashi Buckets and Green Frog EM Bokashi Powder. For our instructions, please see the attached recommendations. Some stores (Green Frog Bokashi Resellers) may not to use our instructions, if you have bought our product, can you let me know where from, so we can enforce some consistency?

I would swing more to 200:1 as a general rule for most established plants. (100:1 being a much stronger dose for those that need a shot in the arm, so to speak). Where I would be careful is with sensitive natives, small vegetable seedlings and for spray on direct foliage (I personally don’t include grass as a direct foliage) for which you might like to go down to 300:1. 500:1 is a teaspoon for 5 litres, I just cannot see it as being beneficial at that diluted rate. For Green Frog Bokashi at least.

I’ll revise our instructions with the owner of Green Frog Bokashi in the new year to see what improvements can be made to the accompanying materials. We don’t have any lab tests as such. However, we would like your feedback if you have time to contribute.

Whats new in Bokashi World

Well, The bokashi bucket is getting more familiar over the last few years. People have actually heard of " that Japanese name". Consumers also realise they need ot stop chucking out food scraps into garbage. (much more valuable as a compost under our garden soil)

More and more stores. More and more enquires about how the system should actually work. Definately, we are keen for people to download the instructions and give it a go. Remember, you need the EM Bokashi Powder for the whole system to work effectively. Instructions . You could do with thew specially designed bucket too?? Australian Resellers
